Renee strikes a chord in the care home

Renee, a resident here at Marina with a smile that brightens up the room turned heads after playing a few tunes on the piano.

Playing music is important for our residents for a variety of reasons, as it can have numerous physical, emotional, and cognitive benefits.

Whether through active participation in playing an instrument like the piano or passive enjoyment through listening, music contributes to a higher quality of life and improved overall health for people.

After an amazing performance in front of an adoring crowd of friends, Renee shared a bit of her history with us.

Renee said:

“I used to be able to play the piano you know! We had lessons every week, my father always wanted me to be able to play the piano; I forgot I could play but those lessons seemed to have worked!”

From this experience, we plan to have a larger focus on music therapy as it offers a means of self-expression, allowing residents to convey their thoughts and emotions when words may fail them.

Music can be especially valuable for those who find it difficult to communicate due to cognitive decline or other health issues.
