The power of canine companions

Mark, a maintenance man from Prime Care regularly brings his two dogs, Wilson and Paris, into Marina Care Home.

Wilson and Paris, who are both four years old, are two French Bulldogs who passionately seek affection from the lovable residents of Marina.

The presence of a friendly and affectionate dog can reduce feelings of loneliness, depression, and anxiety, promoting overall happiness and contentment among residents.

Wilson and Paris provide a common topic of conversation and encourage residents to interact with one another, fostering a sense of community and reducing social isolation.

Mark said:

“The residents love it when they come with me to work, they’re always on their best behaviour and residents will ask where they are if they don’t come in with me.

“The dogs enjoy receiving attention from residents all day while sitting and being stroked. They are loved by the residents as much as the residents love them!”

Dogs are known for their ability to bring smiles and laughter. Their playful antics and affectionate nature can uplift the spirits of residents and create a positive atmosphere in the care home.

Rene, a Resident at Marina said:

“I used to have a Labrador, so I get excited when Mark brings his dogs in. They remind me of fond memories with my lab and it fills my heart with joy. I’m very thankful we see Wilson and Paris regularly.”

The quality of life for residents improves due to the benefits of pet therapy in the home. Dogs, by providing companionship, joy, and a sense of normalcy, make the care home environment more homely and comforting.
